Matt McKee’s Promethean Dreams show opens at the Uforge Gallery on August 18th and runs until September 11th. The Artist Reception is on September 1, 6-8 pm. Uforge Gallery is located at 767 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130
Promethean Dreams samples two sides of Matt McKee, the multifaceted photographer and artist, based out of Hyde Park, MA.
Disquiet Slumber, the dreams portion of the show displays film still-esque surreal moments of characters captured in mid-event. The viewer is left suspended, wondering about the moment before and concerned for the moment after the camera’ shutter’s click.
The Promethean portion of the show is taken up with an exploration of the visual form of a flame. Captured in a moment, frozen in an abstract setting, each flame takes on its own life and personality. Speaking to each viewer privately, some see angels and dragons, while others see dancers and waves. Each is true and false as this primal element calls to something unique, deep inside us all.
Both bodies of work reference the beauty in darkness, whether it be a reluctant voyeur anticipating the next moment or allowing the abstract shapes of raw fire bring out images of our subconscious.
Matt McKee creates photos and digital illustrations for an international roster of commercial clients, as well as producing bodies of work for collectors and appreciators of fine photography. He lives in Dedham with his wife and two sons.
