Friends of Steampuffin’s Bruce and Melanie Rosenbaum stopped by the studio the other day, in full costume, to help us create photographs for an up coming book that plans on being the definitive work on the subject of Steampunk.

For those of you who haven’t come across this growing phenomenon, think Jules Verne, and H G Wells. It’s a sort of Victorian past meets the future, romantic fantasy combined with technology, with a bit of Make-Fair/DIY thrown in. Some good examples, for visual reference, are Wild Wild West, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and The Golden Compass. Some people throw Sherlock Holmes and Hellboy, in there as well.
As a group, the people who participate in steampunk events are a blast to work with. They are friendly, outgoing and have a great sense of humor. I have only been to two events so far, strictly in an audience capacity. But it is easy to see why it is growing so fast. Anyone can dress up and create their own character. It is sort of like a themed Halloween party, without the gore-fest that the spooky holiday has become.
The dandy here is A Count Named Slick Brass, a sort of gentleman pirate, who is a larger than life character, stalking the halls of various comi-cons and conventions.
