Yellow Face Poster
A Poster Collab for Yellow Face
Let’s talk about Yellow Face, a satirical comedy, inspired by real events, written by David Henry Hwang.
I had the pleasure to be at the table read for this one and had to cover my mouth because I was laughing so hard!
My friends at The Footlight Club, bounce around a number of ideas for the promo poster. We finally landed on the mask idea, with a bit of a twist.
Every player would have their own mask to thrust into the page to help illustrate how each of us wears different masks in our day to day life.
The Photo Shoot
The concept for our version of the Yellow Face Poster called for two sets: one for Mordecai and for photographing the arms holding masks. And, a second set for capturing faces. Lighting was simple and clean.
A huge thank you to Jasmine Santos for whipping up a few blank masks on sticks for me.
And, to Nancy Ishihara for a super quick turn around on getting the costume ready. We only needed one for Mordecai.
The Character Portraits
Working with the actors to bring out their characters for these is always a blast.
It’s been called an improv exercise more than once.
The really interesting part is when they are playing multiple parts in the production.
The publicity director programs these into social media interviews, posts and even the headshot board by the theater entrance.
We have even used the character portraits in several collage pieces including The Footlight Club’s season brochure covers.
Supporting Live Theater!
At last count, I have created over 70 posters over the years, for a wide variety of productions.
Like any client, theaters have their own unique challenges and rewards.
The biggest reward, for me, is helping to support live theater, especially at this level.
Go out and support your local community theater, whether it is buying a ticket and going to a show or getting involved as an usher, actor, producer or photographer.
You will have so much fun!
